Michael George Whalley died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Tuesday, September 1, 2009.
Born in Sydney, September 24, 1922, he was the son of the late Rev. C.K. and Muriel (Trivett) Whalley.
Michael was educated in Sydney and graduated from Sydney Academy and then joined the RCAF at the age of 18. He was posted overseas and served as Flight Lieutenant as well as flight instructor in 428 Squadron during the Second World War. Michael was a pilot in Bomber Command at the age of 20 when he was shot down over Hamlin, Germany in September 1942. He was captured and held as prisoner of war in Stalag Luft III (the camp of the Great Escape) until the end of the war in 1945.
He returned to Nova Scotia and attended Mount Allison University for an undergraduate degree and went on to study law at Dalhousie University where he received his LLB and was admitted to the Bar of Nova Scotia in 1949. He went on to practice law in general practice for five years; Supernumerary Magistrate for five years and City Solicitor for the City of Sydney from 1959 - 1987. He was appointed QC in 1974 and continued practicing law well into his 80s. Michael was a devoted husband and father and spent many blissful hours fly fishing on the Margaree River and tending his gardens in Blackett’s Lake. He was a long time member of St. George’s Anglican Church in Sydney and in recent years, St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Coxheath.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Meryl (Patterson) and children, Anne (Bruce) Reardon, Clement, Patricia (Eric) Ferguson and John. He has three grandchildren, David, Jane and Michael Ferguson. He is also survived by sisters, Dorothy and Faith.
He was predeceased by brothers, Richard and John and sister, Joan.
There will be no visitation at Michael’s request. A graveside service will be held at Hardwood Hill Cemetery on Friday, Sept. 4 with Rev. Fred Rhymes officiating.
