It is with great sadness, yet with a sense of peace, that we announce the passing of Donald Edward McKay of Thorburn at the age of 94. Dad leaves his loving wife of 73 years Evelyn (Rankin) McKay, children Gordon (Judy), North Bay, Ontario, Bain (Alice), Ottawa, and Carol (Greg) Wagar, Edmonton. Dad was the proud grandfather of Scott, Nancy, Craig, David and Anne and great grandchildren Baylee, Talina, Tylan, Brendan and Gabriel. He was predeceased by parents James E. McKay and Lecettia (Bain) of Thorburn and siblings Grace, Emerson, Elizabeth, Florence, Laura, Gordon and Carlyle. Dad was a 67-year Mason and life member of Hudson Lodge # 77, a 60 year Past Master and recognized as Grand Steward of the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia. He saw action on the North Atlantic with the Royal Canadian Navy during WW2. He was a dedicated lifetime member and elder of Union Presbyterian Church, Thorburn. He worked at the McBean mine, Trenton Car Works and Scott Paper. He loved all sports, excelling in hockey and softball in his younger years and was a dedicated and generous friend to all, especially those in need. Special thanks to Bev Thorne, nephew Emerson Dempster, Liz Archibald, John and Darlene Reeves, VON Health Services, the Palliative Care Unit at the Aberdeen Hospital and Dr. Gregor MacLean. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Saturday, July 27 at Union Presbyterian Church, Thorburn, John Reeves officiating, with refreshments and time of fellowship following the service. No visitation. A Masonic Memorial Service will be held at the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow, Friday, July 26th at 7:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Union Presbyterian Church building fund or charity of your choice.
