It is with heavy hearts that our mother, Theresa, has joined our father, Bill, in their Heavenly home, Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, at the age of 80, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Glace Bay on February 2, 1929, along with her identical twin sister, Catherine, they were the second and third children of Jess and Bill Ford of Glace Bay.
Raised in Glace Bay, at 17 she met and married Bill Gillis of Sydney, a veteran returning from the Second World War. A wife and homemaker, they were long time members of St. Leo’s parish and enjoyed a 49 year marriage that ended with Bill’s passing in 1995. Our mother will be remembered for her courageous spirit, devotion to family, her keen sense of humour, love of telling a good story and her famous coconut cream pies.
Theresa is survived by one daughter, Donna (Wayne Haryett) of Edmonton, AB; four sons, Dan (Ellen) of Milford, NS, Archie (Rose Carmel) of Bedford, NS, Terry of Sydney, NS, and Billy (Leona) of Glace Bay, NS; nine granddaughters; six grandsons; eight great-granddaughters; seven great-grandsons; brothers, Billy and David (Sharon); sisters, Margaret, Helen, Lorraine (David McKillop), Ruth, Carol and Linda (Ernie Billard).
Theresa was predeceased by husband, Bill; son, Robert Angus in infancy; great-granddaughter, Victoria Rose in infancy; parents, Bill and Jess Ford; brothers, Paul and Jim Ford; sister and best friend, Mary; sisters, Catherine, Rita, Anne Shirley, Anne Jovita and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Theresa Gillis will be held Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Leo’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. A reception will follow in the church hall, all are welcome.
