Stellarton: Trueman Blair Slater, 80 passed away in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital on June 9th, 2011 with his wife Helen and daughter Ann by his side.
Trueman was born in Roachvale, Guys.Co. in 1930 to Howard and Nellie (O’Hara) Slater. He was the youngest of six children.
He and his parents relocated in 1951 to the farm in Scotsburn.
In 1957, he married Helen MacLeod of Six Mile Brook. They lived in Tatamagouche for 10 years. While there, Trueman worked for Langille Brothers, J A MacKeen’s as a mechanic and for Cole’s Transfer as a truck driver.
In 1967, he and his wife moved to Stellarton and a year later Ann was born. He went to work for the Casey Ford Garage, Atlantic Motors and for the 30 some years with Stone’s Superior Homes where he worked until his retirement.
He was a member of Sharon St. John United Church, former member of the Session and the Board of Stewards. Trueman also served on several other committees with the church.
He was a former member of the Barbershop Chorus which he enjoyed. He spent his spare time playing golfing and looked forward to his annual game of golf at Green Gables. He also enjoyed going to Old Time Dances with Helen and playing cards with family and friends.
He spent several winters vacationing in Florida and camping during the summer months in PEI and at Harbour Lights. In the fall he and his family travelled to various exhibitions and helped to show Belgian Draft Horses which he was so proud of.
He will be lovingly missed by Helen and Ann. Trueman will be remembered for his unassuming, well matured mannerisms. He was a good friend who supported family and friends in their time of need.
He was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Helen of 53 years and his daughter, Ann, his sisters Vera (Lloyd) McCabe, Maine, Blanche, Halifax, Ora (Eric) Bartlett, Toronto and brothers, Bart, Miramichi, Bud, Keswick, Ontario and cousins Garnie(Syliva) Wamback, NewGlasgow and Kaye Boates, Summerside. Trueman is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held at HCMacQuarrie Funeral Home in Stellarton on Sunday, June 12, 2011 from 3 to 5 and from 7 to 9. Funeral Service will be held at Sharon St. John United Church at 2:30pm on Monday, June 13, 2011 with Rev. John Roy presiding. Reception to follow in the church hall. Burial will take place at the Abercrombie Cemetery.
