Dr. John Philip Macdonald, 90, of 19 Union St., Sydney, died peacefully Friday, Sept. 4, 2009, at home.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Dr. John and Hannah Frances (Creelman) Macdonald.
He was an adherent of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Sydney. Educated in Sydney schools, Philip attended Mount Allison and Dalhousie universities. He graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in 1945 and shortly thereafter began general practice upon joining with his brother, Dr. Gordon and continued on in that capacity for 45 years in Cape Breton County and surrounding areas.
Besides his dedication to service, Philip took great pride in home life and especially the times he spent with his family and friends on the Mira. He was the last surviving member of his family.
Philip is survived by his wife, the former, Ella MacIntosh Mitchell; two daughters, Catherine McCharles, Sydney, Elizabeth C., Halifax; two sons, James P. (Marilyn), Sandfield, Kemp (Elaine), Halifax; seven grandchildren, Stephen, Grant, Rebecca, Hannah, Carrie, Elizabeth, Katherine; two great-grandchildren, Bryn, Ewan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Philip was predeceased by his brothers, Dr. Gordon, James C., and an infant brother, James.
The late Dr. Philip Macdonald will have visitation Tuesday (today) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. in Bethel Presbyterian Church with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Burial will take place in Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Sydney.
Donations in Dr. Philip’s memory may be made to the oncology department of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Canadian Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of choice.
