Malcolm ‘Mack’ Read died Sept. 4, 2009, in a tragic accident at his home.
Mack was born in Amherst and was the son of the late Harold and Myrtle (Haliday) Read. He moved to Cape Breton in the 1950s and made it his home. He had retired from the building supply distribution business many years ago but continued to operate a winter storage business for boats, cars and RV’s at his site in Sydney River.
He had many friends throughout Cape Breton and was especially fond of spending time in northern Inverness County. He enjoyed the outdoors and country living, and took great care in keeping his properties neat, tidy and presentable. An able negotiator with a sharp mind, he prided himself on knowing all of the details and being considerate of others. Close friends and family will remember him as being a very kind and often overly generous man. Mack was a member of the United Protestant Church, Sydney River.
Mack is survived by his fiancée, Dr. Lilia Aquino; sons, Stephen (Irene Grezel),Marion Bridge, Burton, Sydney, Kenneth (Annette Keefe) London, Ont., Stewart (Trudy Newell), Deer Lake, N.L.; and daughter, Janis (Mark Herlehy),Westport, Ont. He leaves grandchildren, Marc, Tara, Alison, Michael, Cory, Laura, Lynn, Christopher, Samantha, Stacia, Adam and Brett. He has one sister living, Muriel (Garnet) Forgrave, London, Ont.; his three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mack was predeceased by his wife, Joan (Harris), brothers, Sterling, Avard, and sisters, Audrey, Joyce and Carole.
Visitation will take place at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, Tuesday, Sept. 8 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the United Protestant Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, followed by burial at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Cemetery, Howie Centre. A luncheon will be held back at the church.
