Laverne Hoogeveen

HOOGEVEEN - Laverne Wilbur, most recently of Ponteix, formerly of Swift Current and Cabri District passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at the St. Joseph's Foyer Nursing Home, Ponteix, SK at the age of 83 years. Laverne was born in Winnipeg, MB on December 8, 1927 and raised on the family farm at Shackleton, SK. He was married twice, firstly to Marlene Harrison then secondly to Maureen Zabel. Over the years Laverne had several jobs including looking after the curling rink, working at the Ford dealership, and driving truck for Mobile Paving and Delta Rock and Sand. After retiring, he and Maureen were the custodians for the Ashley Park Community Hall for 12 years. Laverne was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion as well as a member of the Seniors Centre. He enjoyed working on his vehicles, loved driving and playing pool and along with Maureen, was a fixture at "coffee row" at the Modern Cafe. Laverne is survived by his wife Maureen; son Edwin; stepdaughters Marilyn (Jim) Schneider, Donna (Dennis) Gerbrandt and Della (Dana) Farnsworth; 7 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; sisters Frances (Pete) Kohut and Edna Smeby as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Robert (Bob) and Hazel and brother-in-law Raymond Smeby. A graveside service was held on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 11:00 am from the Shackleton Cemetery, Shackleton, SK with Pastor Greg Kiel officiating. Lindsay Gerbrandt presented the eulogy. Memorial donations may be made in Laverne's memory to the Alzheimer Association of Saskatchewan, 301-2550-12th Ave. Regina, SK S4P 3X1 or to the St. Joseph's Foyer Nursing Home, Ponteix, SK S0N 1Z0.
