With loving and heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Earl Melvin Reid on Saturday, June 18, 2011, at the Palliative Care Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Bras d’Or, Earl was the son of the late Robert and Ethel Reid.
Earl was a veteran of the Second World War serving overseas with the Cape Breton Highlanders. He was employed as a mechanic with the City of Sydney, Public Works Department for 33 years. Earl enjoyed his life to the fullest. He was an avid player of horseshoes and won many championships throughout Cape Breton and Nova Scotia. Also, Earl loved baseball where he was known for his umpire skills.
Earl is survived by his loving children, Jeannie (George) MacPherson and Earl (Evelyn); along with his grandchildren, Kari and Allana MacPherson, Robert, Mark and Jennifer Reid. He will also be missed by his great-grandson, Dawson, his pride and joy.
Besides his parents, Earl was predeceased by his wife, Allie (Black), his brother, Robert and special sister, Alice MacKinnon.
Visitation will take place Tuesday, June 21 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 22 in the funeral home chapel. Reception to follow. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
