It is with great sadness the family announces the sudden passing of Gary John Thompson of Amherst, Nova Scotia on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at the Ottawa Hospital-General Campus, Ottawa, ON., at the age of 76.
Born in Toronto, ON, he was the son of the late Gordon and Mary (John) Thompson.
Gary worked for Northern Telecom (Northern Electric) in Montreal and Amherst for over 30 years, retiring in 1992. He was an active member of Trinity - St. Stephen's United Church, the Telephone Pioneers and had been active in Scouts Canada.
He had a passion for crossword puzzles but cooking for family and friends was sheer enjoyment.
Gary was the loving and supportive husband of Jean (Fawcett); the proud father of Darryl (Christina) of Ottawa, Craig (Catherine De Rossi) of Sudbury and Glenn (Angela Murphy) of Calgary. In May, Gary was thrilled to welcome his grandson Jack of Ottawa.
He is also survived by cousins, Catherine (Nan) Kinnon of Peterborough, ON and Marion McCuaig of Toronto.
The family will receive visitors at Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst on Sunday, September 13, 2009 from 2 - 5 p.m. only.
The funeral service will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. from Trinity - St. Stephen's United Church, Amherst with Rev. Patti Blundell and Rev. Susan Estabrooks officiating.
Internment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Gary's memory to the Nova Scotia Lung Association, Trinity - St. Stephen's United Church or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
