MARTYN, James Egbert - 64, of Smith's Cove, passed away quietly surrounded by his loving family in Digby General Hospital on May 28, 2011. James was born in Middleton on January 30, 1947, to the late Margaret (Neily) and Egbert Martyn. He is survived by his wife of 43 years Victoria (Wood) Martyn; son, Tracy (Chrissy Teichrib), Chilliwack, B.C.; daughter, Cindy (Darren Boyd), Seabrook, Digby; grandchildren, Jordan and Taylor Comeau, step grandchildren, Kelsey and Nicholas Boyd, Ashley, Dalton and Dayton Bardos; brothers, Robert Martyn, Toronto; Kevin (Karen) Martyn, Coquitlam, B.C.; sister, Carole (Frank) Longley, Lawrencetown; 13 nephews and 6 nieces. Jim was employed by MT&T (Bell Aliant) for approximately 30 years, he worked province wide, until retirement in 1995. Jim was a lifetime member of the Bell Aliant Pioneers. He worked for Roy Brinton then Mike Brinton for 10 years. He then started working for his son-in-law Darren until he became ill. Jim was with Smith's Cove Volunteer Fire Department from 1974 to 2011 and served as the Fire Chief, 1997 to 2010, and Deputy Chief, 2010-2011. He was a First Responder as well a lifetime member of Smith's Cove Volunteer Fire Department. Jim belonged to Smith's Cove Baptist Church and did the janitorial work. He was on the M.R.H.S. Rugby Team 1963-1964 which won the Provincial Championship in that year. He played baseball into his adult years and was on a MT&T team. Jim curled for many years in the Monday and Wednesday night leagues, daytime senior league and volunteered with the ice maintenance at the Digby Club. Special thanks to Dr. Beukes and all the nursing staff of the Medical Care Unit of Digby General Hospital. Also thanks to the doctors and nurses of Halifax Infirmary, the VG Site and the Rehab Centre, QEII. Pastor Mark Cress officiated the service with burial in Sulis Smith Cemetery, Smith's Cove. Donations may be made to Smith's Cove Fire Dept, Smith's Cove Baptist Church and the Canadian Cancer Society.
