New Glasgow – David “Sonny” MacLean. It is with great sadness the family of David C. “Sonny” MacLean, 68, of Cottage Street, New Glasgow announces he passed away peacefully on June 28 at the Aberdeen Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Sonny was born in New Glasgow the youngest of 10 children of the late Hugh John and Loretta (Fogarty) MacLean. He attended school at St John’s Academy and New Glasgow High before heading to St FX where he played varsity hockey graduating in 1966 with Bachelor of Commerce. Dave worked for the Federal Government Manpower department for 30 years, the first couple of years in Sydney, returning home to New Glasgow in 1971 for the rest of his career. Sonny semi-retired in 1998, continuing to consult in his areas of expertise at Career Connections for the next 4 years - as long as it did not interfere with golf season. Sonny had a passion for everything in life but most especially Darla, his devoted wife of 44 years and his son, Glenn – his all time favourite golfing partner. He was a long time member of Abercrombie Golf Club and a key organizer of the Legends Golf league there. He was inducted into both St FX and Pictou County Sports Hall of Fame (for hockey). He was a loyal fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs; a proud member of the Bombers club; actively involved in the 2000 North End Reunion; volunteer for minor hockey; volunteer for the NS Kidney Foundation; member of Toastmasters and a lifelong member of St John’s Parish in New Glasgow. Sonny enjoyed the many hours he spent at Melmerby Beach each summer, was an avid reader and in the last few years, travelled to New York, Florida, Massachusetts, Toronto and Niagara Falls. Sonny was the heart and soul of his extended family and friends. Sonny had a keen sense of humour with a quick wit, able to get away with saying anything to anybody and leave them with a smile on their face. No matter who or what the circumstance, Sonny always made you feel welcome and at home. Sonny was a beloved husband, compassionate father, favourite uncle and true friend. He is survived by wife Darla (Campbell), son Glenn; brothers and sisters Jack (Pat), Don “Ducky” (Viola), Bob (Laura), Kaye (Jim) MacDonald, Betty (Roddie) Flavin of New Glasgow; brother Harvey of Halifax; sister-in-law Doris of New Glasgow; many loving nieces and nephews. Sonny will also be deeply missed by Darla’s sisters Nancy and Kathy and the entire extended Campbell family. He was predeceased by his parents Hugh John and Loretta (Fogarty); brother Joe and sisters Isabel Power and Marion Collins. Sonny played a huge role in the lives of all he touched and we will be comforted by our memories of all he meant to each of us. Visitation will be held at R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow on Thursday, June 30 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be at St John the Baptist Church in New Glasgow on Friday, July 1 at 11am with Rev Gary MacPherson officiating. Burial will be celebrated at Holy Cross Cemetery, New Glasgow. If desired, donations in Sonny’s memory may be made to NS Cancer Society; Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit; or charity of your choice. Condolences at: www.rhporter.ca
