TOMAS DOBROVOLNY

Born In: Hovorany, Czech Republic
Born: March 4th, 1927

Passed in: Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada
Passed on: June 27th, 2011

It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Tom Dobrovolny at Kamloops Seniors Village on June 27, 2011 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease at the age of 84.

Tom's memory will be cherished by his loving wife of 53 years, Mary, his sons: Thomas (Joanne), Jim (Sharon) and Dan (Marianna), eight beautiful grandchildren: Sarah, Matthew, Jackson, Jonathan, Jimmy, Katie, Nicholas and Grace. Also left to cherish his memory is his brother Peter (Marie) and family in the Czech Republic.

Tom was born on March 4, 1927 in Hovorany, Czechoslovakia. After the war in 1950, Tom and his brother escaped from Communist Czechoslovakia and walked to the British Zone in Germany. They were there during the Nuremberg Trials. He was accepted as a Displaced Person by Australia and traveled on one of Aristotle Onassis ships, which transported refugees to that country. Tom got a job as a carpenter in Papua New Guinea working for the Australian Government. Some 50 years later he took Mary to visit these areas.

He came to New Westminster in 1955 and worked for Dominion Construction on many projects in Vancouver. In 1956 he met Mary and they married in 1958 producing three sons. In 1964, Tom, Mary and their three little boys moved to Kamloops, where the climate was better for their health. They never looked back! Tom worked construction all over the province supervising projects; one that stands out is the stack at Domtar.

But most of all he loved Kamloops, his family, the cabin at Lac Le Jeune, his motorcycle, hunting and fishing.
There will be no formal service by request.

Should friends desire, donations to the Alzheimer's Society of BC, Box 277, Stn Main, Kamloops, BC V2C 5K6 in memory of Tom would be appreciated.

Special thanks to the staff at Ponderosa Lodge (respite) and Kamloops Seniors Village for their loving care.
