Alfred ‘Gerard’ Mombourquette, age 73, of L’Ardoise, passed away Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in L’Ardoise, he was the only son of the late Willie C. and Della (Briand) Mombourquette.
In his youth Gerard was an avid baseball enthusiast and a popular member of the L’Ardoise Ramblers senior baseball team. He continued to follow baseball and watch with keen interest the progress of the Toronto Blue Jays. He was also a big supporter of the Montreal Canadiens. For many years Gerard assisted his parents in the running of a general store, operated from their home on Willie C. Drive in L’Ardoise. He will be fondly remembered as the fuel delivery truck driver having been employed with Frank’s Fuels and Boudreau Fuels for over 45 years. In his leisure time, Gerard was very passionate about his garden.
Gifted with a deep rooted Christian faith, Gerard had a deep sense of community involvement. As a devout Catholic he was active in many aspects of parish life, including L’Ardoise parish council, an usher and a eucharistic minister, a first to be commissioned as a lay person in Holy Guardian Angels Church. He was also involved in organizational activities associated with the L’Ardoise Acadian Festival and a founding member of the L’Ardoise Men’s Club. He was a member of the L’Ardoise Jolly Club.
Family ties were very important to Gerard’s life. He is survived by a son, Glenn (Michelle), Mira, NS; daughter, Shelley (Bill Lewis), Lower Sackville, NS; sisters, Muriel (John Maunder), Scarborough, ON and Myrtle Radford, Prince George, BC and sister-in-law, Hughette Martell, L’Ardoise. He is also survived by two grandsons, David and Derek; a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marie-Jeanne (Chiasson) in 2002.
Remains of the late Gerard Mombourquette will rest in the L’Ardoise Parish Funeral Home on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009 from 2-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009 from Holy Guardian Angels Church, L’Ardoise with Fr. Lourdusamy Manadoss officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery. A reception will follow in the L’Ardoise Community Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cancer Care Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital or the Dr. W. B. Kingston Medical Clinic, L’Ardoise.
