It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother and grandmother, Mary Florence ‘Flo’ Blackie, 87, on Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Bay St. Lawrence, Feb. 27, 1922, she was the daughter of the late James and Sarah (MacLellan) Burton.
She was a member of St. Pius X parish, Sydney Mines.
Flo was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Flo is survived by her daughter, Donna (Joe), Sydney Mines; and her sons, Frankie, Leitches Creek, and Stevie (Lisa), Sydney Mines. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Bernie, Sharon, Florence, Wanda, Troy, Michael, Rebecca, Tonia and Kevin; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and two special nieces, Bev LeBlanc and Bealia Doyle.
Besides her parents, Flo was predeceased by her husband, Steve, granddaughter, Trina, brothers, George, Murdock and John and sisters, Margaret Hollingsworth, Ann MacNeil, Sadie MacDonald and Violet Bonner.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A funeral mass celebrating Flo’s life will take place Thursday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Thomas John officiating. A reception will follow the service in the parish hall. The burial will be held at a later date.
Donations in Flo’s memory may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
