Muriel Cameron
Muriel Jean Cameron, 95, of Willow Avenue, New Glasgow, passed away Monday July 4, 2011 at home.
She was a daughter of the late Issac and Hannah (Laite) Luther of Corner Brook, NL.
Issac was killed in the Allan Shaft Explosion of 1918 when she was three years of age.
Born is Stellarton, Muriel attended High School and a Business Course and worked briefly before her marriage. While raising her family she also participated in running the small farm on which the family lived. Later in life, Mom worked several years at Proudfoots.
Mom was an avid reader, bridge player and entertainer. She loved doing puzzles and won the Herald’s Lexicon prize on two different occasions.
Having studied piano and voice with her mother, she continued to sing at parties and sing-a-longs at home.
She was a member of the Trinity United Church and choir for a number of years as well as a fiercely loyal Conservative Party supporter.
Mom was proud of her family and initiated many family get togethers. Her “Newfie” humour was legendary.
Muriel is survived by sons: Dr. Albert and Colin (Marsha Hatfield), both of Dartmouth; Stephen (Margie Aikens), Malcolm (her principal care giver for the past 10 years of her life), both of New Glasgow; a daughter, Janice (Bill Thomson), Thornhill, Ontario; daughters-in-law: Rose Marie (Bourque), Dartmouth; Norma (MacInnes), Halifax; Janet (MacQuarrie), New Glasgow, 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren.
Muriel was predeceased by her husband, Wendell; a brother, Earle; sisters, Irene and Eunice; sons: Douglas, Fraser and Sandy.
Mom’s kind and gentle demeanor, along with her wicked sense of humour will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Grateful thanks are extended to the wonderful care givers who assisted in her care.
Her remains will rest in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow, for visiting from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday from Trinity United Church, New Glasgow, with Rev. Jim Webber-Cook presiding. Burial will take place in the Brookside Cemetery, New Glasgow. Reception to take place in the church hall.
