Joan Farthing

Joan Mary Farthing age 89, of Amherst passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Gables Lodge, Amherst.
Born September 6, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Otto Punchard and Annie Elizabeth (Townshend) Farthing.
Joan spent her younger years traveling throughout Canada with her parents as her father enjoyed a career with the RCMP. This whet her appetite for travel and lead her to enlist with the Canadian Military. A proud veteran, she served overseas during WWII and was stationed in various countries throughout Europe in the post WWII era.
Following this, Joan completed her studies, graduating from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. She was employed by the city of Toronto as a social worker for numerous years. This position allowed her to have a positive impact on the many people with whom she was able to share her compassion and her wisdom.
Joan was an avid bridge player and a gourmet cook. She enjoyed collecting stamps and fine china.
Her final years were spent at Gables Lodge in Amherst where she was greatly admired for her life experiences and her wisdom and her wit.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at 11 a.m. in Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (667-9906) with The Rev. Charlotte Ross officiating.
Interment will follow in Christ Church Cemetery, Amherst.
Memorial donations in Joan’s memory may be made to the L.A. Animal Shelter or Christ Church, Amherst.
