New Glasgow – James “Jim” MacDonald. The family of James Adrian “Jim” MacDonald of Brookside Ave, New Glasgow are deeply saddened to announce his passing on Friday, July 8, 2011 at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Jim was born in New Glasgow on April 7, 1927, a son of the late Alexander and Florence (Fraser) MacDonald. He is lovingly survived by his wife and best friend, Kaye (MacLean) and his three adoring children, Janice (Eric) Turner, Oakville, Ont., Sandy, New Glasgow and David (Sheila) MacDonald, New Glasgow. He was an exceptional, loving grandfather to his five grandchildren, Matthew Turner, Calgary, Alt, Bryan Turner, Oakville, Ont., and Brittany, Jacob and Lukas MacDonald, all of New Glasgow. Jim's quiet and unassuming nature and great sense of humour will be missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him. He retired in 1989, after a 36 year career with the Canada Post Corporation in New Glasgow and Stellarton. He was a long time volunteer with the Shepherd's Lunch Room, enjoying every moment he could help others. Jim was also a World War 2 Veteran and was a long time member of the New Glasgow Branch 34 Legion. He served many years as a Eucharist minister at St. John's the Baptist Church. He was also an avid golfer at the Abercrombie Golf Course, serving on the Board of Directors for several years, and will be greatly missed by his many golfing buddies. Besides his family, Jim's greatest love was hockey being an avid fan of the Boston Bruins. He was an exceptional player, teammate and coach over his many years in hockey, being inducted into the Pictou County Hall of Fame on two occasions, as a player and as a teammate. He was a skilled hockey player and was invited to the New York Rangers training camp and continued his love of hockey, playing until his 70's. He was an inspiring coach to many young hockey players, and has passed his love and his ability to play onto his sons, and grandsons. Jim is also survived by his sisters, Kathleen (the late Lionel Campbell), New Glasgow, Helen (John Granville) Belleville, Ont., Mary (the late Walter Nolan), Halifax, Florence (Brian O’Brien) Halifax, Jean (Alan Stewart) Mass., and Dorothy (Fred Perry) Ottawa, and his brothers C. Fraser “Buddy” (Betty O'Hara), Mass., and John “Jose”, MacDonald, Halifax. "Uncle Jimmy" will also be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brothers, Ronald, Carl and Norbert. There will be no visitation at the request of the family. A memorial service will be held at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at 11 am, with Father Gary MacPherson officiating. Family flowers only.
