It is with heavy hearts the Milley family announces the peaceful passing of Joseph 'Joey' Milley on September 18, 2009, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Joey was born June 28, 1955 to the late Joseph and Mary Ellen Milley.
Joey was a much-loved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend, and neighbor. He lived all his years in New Waterford and devoted his entire life to his family. Joey was a hard worker and there was nothing he couldn't put his hand to. He worked as a coal miner for 21 years and, more recently, in Alberta for various periods of time. But the most important thing in Joey's life was his family, his commitment to his wife, Darlene, and to his pride and joy, his daughter, Kayla. They were first and foremost in his heart and mind until he drew his last breath. As the only one of the Milley children to remain in New Waterford, he was totally dedicated in recent years to the care of our mother who passed away in 2007.
Joey will be lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews as a mentor who taught them many practical skills, covering everything from building and/or fixing things to how to catch the perfect size fish for the frying pan. He also had a wide circle of friends and acquaintances who admired and respected him greatly. Joey was appreciated most especially by his neighbors who knew they could always count on him for any assistance great or small.
Left to treasure his memory are his wife, Darlene (Mombourquette); daughter, Kayla; sisters, Joanne (Ron) Beaton, Port Hawkesbury, Linda (Ron) McKinnon, Toronto, Jeanette, Laurie (Dave), both of Halifax, Florence (Isabel), Loch Katrine, Marina (Ernie) MacKay, Halifax; brothers, Fred (Mary), Waverley, Steve (Tina), Weldon (Bev), both of Edmonton; aunts Rita Lauzon, Big Harbour, Zabina VanAdestine, Mississauga; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friend and neighbor, Mary MacMillan.
Sharing in our sadness are Darlene’s family, her mother, Marie; sisters, Shirley LeBlanc, Paula (Greg) MacNeil and brother Wayne (Betty) and their families.
Joey was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Mary Ellen (Deveaux); brothers Ronnie (1974) and Glenn (2005); sister Mary and nephew Joseph, in infancy and his father-in-law Joe Mombourquette.
Visitation will be held Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass to celebrate Joey's life will take place Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Father Doug MacDonald officiating. Cremation will follow with burial in Mount Carmel Cemetery at a later date. A luncheon will be held at the Carmel Centre immediately following the funeral mass. All are welcome.
Donations in Joey's memory may be made to the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
