It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our husband, father and grandfather, Dan Nicholson on September 17, 2009 at the Glace Bay Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Joseph and Catherine (MacDonald) Nicholson. Danny was a member of St. Leo’s Church in Glace Bay.
Danny worked for Devco for 30 years, was a local coal hauler from 1984 to 1998, was currently employed with Maritect Security,and was a volunteer usher at the Savoy Theatre. Danny was an avid baseball fan, and truly loved the Red Soxs. He was very active in local baseball, coaching the Glace Bay Little League for 37 years. Danny organized the Little Leaguers’ Reunion of the 50’s which was held during the celebration of the Glace Bay’s 50 years of little league. Danny made many distant friends by writing notes, putting them in bottles, and tossing them into the ocean. He was a very outgoing and personable man who was always happy, which was so very noticeable when he suited up as Santa Clause.
Danny is survived by his loving wife, Genevieve (McLean); daughter Danette, at home; sons Brad (Julie) Halifax, Blair (Christina) Glace Bay, and Brett; a grandson, who Danny raised as his son, at home; sisters, Diane Zamora, Phoenix, Arizona, Dorthy (Lawrence) Ferguson, Sydney, and seven grandchildren, Brett, at home, Kaitlynn, Daniel, David, Dillon, Katrina, all of Glace Bay, Sophia, Halifax . As well as a very close family friend, Kevin McNeil ,who accompanied the Nicholson family on many family outings, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Danny was predeceased by a brother Joseph ‘Gook’.
Visitation For Danny will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home , 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Bill Rankin will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in St. Leo’s Church, Glace Bay, followed by interment in the parish cemetery. All are invited to a reception in the church hall.
As an expression of sympathy for Danny, donations in his memory may be made to St. Leo’s Church or the Children’s Wish Foundation.
