It is with heartfelt sorrow and broken hearts that we said goodbye to our only child. Our son Zachary Donald MacDonald passed away Saturday July, 16, 2011 with his parents and family by his side.
Zack was born May 31, 1988 to proud parents Donald and Shirley (Bennett) MacDonald. Zack grew up in Sydney Mines and was a student studying political science at Cape Breton University. Zack’s dream was to become a lawyer and one day to have his name on a ballot in the political arena.
A true Liberal at heart , at an early age he waited in the rain when he was 12 years old to shake Jean Chrétien’s hand. That was one of his proud moments. Zack was a friend to a lot of people with his keen wit and humour and was always there to lend a hand or an ear to his friends as is evident from the stories on his Facebook page. Zack loved life; he loved hunting, fishing or just walking on his ancestral land in Scotch Lake.
Zack loved his red Camaro, his dog Ellie and his beloved Edmonton Oilers. A highlight for him just a few weeks ago was receiving a call from the Oilers head coach telling Zack “He was part of the team.”
Zack’s love of baseball took him to Ontario in what ended up being the best summer of his life. He followed his Blue Jays to Yankee Stadium and Detroit as well as home games in Toronto.
Zack spent the last five months at what he called the Hanoi Hilton. He said he was in Afghanistan fighting for his life. Zachary lost the battle of his life, his memory lives on in each and every one of us.
Zack is survived by his parents, his beloved Nan, Grace Bennett, along with many aunts and uncles; Roddie (Jerry) Bennett, Sharon (Fred) Howard, Bobbie (Mia), John ( Kelly), Marjorie ( Leo), Jane, Walter (Lynn), Alounda, Danie ( Marjorie), Peter, Gerard (Kim), Angie (Jimmy), Mary (Larry), Alan (Nancy), Paul (Francis), Michael (Theresa) MacDonald, and many cousins.
He was predeceased by Grandfather and Grannie (Bob and Mae MacDonald), Poppy Bennett (Roddie), Uncle Bud Bennett, Aunt Nora MacDonald, Uncle Tommy and cousins Nick Withers and Leah McInnis.
Visitation for Zack MacDonald will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines on Tuesday July, 19, 2011, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass celebrating his life will take place on Wednesday, July 20 at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Thomas John officiating, with burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
In keeping with Zack’s wishes, the family encourages everyone to join the bone marrow registry (onematch.ca). Donations may be made to St. Pius X roof project or charity of one’s choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca
