CHASE, Joan Erma (Hennigar) (Cavanagh)- 79, of New Minas, passed away peacefully at home, Monday, July 11, 2011 with her loving family by her side after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born on February 3, 1932, she was the only child of the late Eldon and Erma (Eisenhauer) Hennigar. Joan was a charter member of The Nova Scotia Hairdressing Association for 30 years, a member of the Wolfville Business Girls Club, a member of the Greenwich Women's Association, a past member of the Wolfville United Baptist Church, a member of the Social & Benevolent Society and most recently a member of the New Minas Baptist Church. She was a past member of the Ken-Wo Golf & Country Club. She was an avid gardener and loved the outdoors. She was a member of the Seniors 50's Club of New Minas and enjoyed playing cards with her many friends at White Rock Hall and the Black River Hall. Although she was battling cancer, she never complained and stayed as involved as she could with the things she enjoyed doing, which showed us what a strong and wonderful role model she was to her family. She has left a very big pair of shoes to fill. Joan was very family orientated. She moved home to look after her mother and father until their passing. After her work was done, her own health deteriorated and she moved in with her daughter, Debbie and her husband, Harold where she spent nine wonderful years. Her most special times were the surprise visits she got from her son, Cyril when he would come home for Christmas from Alberta. She loved spending time with her children, grand-children and great-grand-children. She was affectionately called "The Other Nanny" by her great-grand-children. They would lay in bed with her in the mornings while she read to them or watched cartoons with them. Then when they got up they got to share whatever "The Other Nanny" was having for breakfast. When she was having a good day they would talk her into going for a walk to the park with them, or getting her to watch them ride their bikes. She was a very hands-on "Other Nanny". Surviving are her son, Cyril Cavanagh and daughter, Deborah Cavanagh-Amberman (Harold); granddaughter, Heather (Cavanagh) Levy (Jason) and great-grandchildren, Sarah, Meghan and Rebekah Levy; granddaughter, Katherine “Katie” Walsh (Michael Vaughan) and great-grandchildren, Hunter and Ficher Walsh-Vaughan; grandson, David “D.J.” Walsh (Christine Brown) and great grandson, Brandon Walsh and step great-grandchildren, Maddison and Carter Myles; step granddaughter, Donna (Kevin) Milne and step great grandchildren, Corey and Mackenzie Milne; step grandson, Gordon Amberman (Marlene Farris) and step great grandchildren, Riley and Victoria Amberman; stepdaughter, Paulette (Chase) Whitman (David) and step granddaughter, Lorie (Whitman) Price (Peter) and step great grandchildren, Dillon and Sydney Price and step granddaughter, Cathey (Whitman) Wheeler.(Greg) and step great grandchildren, Halay, Christin and Grayson Wheeler. She will also be missed by her bed warmer "Black Jack" the cat. She was so loving to all of us that her love will shine through forever. Cyril, Debbie and Harold would like to say a very special thank you to Dr. Crystal Todd for all the kindness and compassion she gave to the family during this time. As well, we would like to thank Dr. Tallal Younis in Oncology and Dr. Rob Rutledge in the Radiation Department at the Dixon Building Cancer Clinic in Halifax, the oncology nurses at the Valley Regional Hospital as well as the VON who came in to do home care. You will always be in our thoughts for being so good to our mother. Cremation has taken place. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2011 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 14, 2011, Reverend Gail Whalen-Dunn officiating. A special thank you to her for the visits and prayers she shared with us. Burial took place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation or the Black River Community Club. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. On-line inquiries and condolences may be directed to www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com.
