COREY, Maxine Elizabeth - It is with regret that we announce the passing of Maxine Elizabeth Corey at Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton on Friday, July 8, 2011 at 96 years of age. Born in Freeport, Digby Co., Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Austin R. and Beatrice C. (Israel) Westcott of that village. Besides her parents she was pre-deceased by her husband Rev. E. Gideon Corey, sister, Frances Johnston, and brother, Rev. Dr. S. Arnold Westcott. She is survived by her sons James (Marlene ) and Robert. The late Mrs. Corey was a graduate of Acadia University with a B.Sc. in Home Economics. She served as a dietitian at the Toronto General Hospital for six years, was superintendent of the Wartime Housing Commissary in Halifax for two years, and in later years taught the Family Living course at the Middleton Regional High School in Annapolis County. She was a Maritime Life Member and a Dominion Life Member of the United Baptist Womens Missionary Union. She was active in and a leader in many community organizations in the communities in which she served with her husband in both New Brunswick (St. George, East Saint John, Chipman) and Nova Scotia (Falmouth/Hantsport, Paradise). She especially enjoyed working with young people and in later years with seniors in New Horizions Groups, Women's Institute and was involved in the Red Cross, Meals-on-Wheels, V.O.N., C.N.I.B., and Canadian Cancer Society. She was a beloved mother and friend to many. Cremation has taken place. Visitation was held Tuesday, July 12, 2011 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448. A memorial service was held at the Lawrencetown United Baptist Church Wednesday, July 13, 2011, Pastor Patty Beals officiated the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Lawrencetown United Baptist Church Memorial Fund, the Freeport United Baptist Church, or a charity of choice.
