It is with great sadness that we announce the death of John Bernard 'Bernie' Murphy after a courageous battle with brain cancer, on Tuesday, July 19, 2011. His love and optimism sustained his family through this difficult time.
He was born in Sydney on April 6, 1943. He was the son of Claire (Gillis) Murphy and the late John Henry 'Harry' Murphy of East Bay.
He enjoyed his career as a teacher at St. Anthony's and St. Anne's schools in Glace Bay. He was an avid golfer and a long time member of Lingan Golf and Country Club. He thoroughly enjoyed his many winters in Florida. He will be fondly remembered for his sharp wit.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 41 years Teresa (Bedecki). His loving children Laurie MacNeil, Lindale, AB, Julie (David) Murphy, Fort McMurray, AB, John (Janet), Chilliwack, B.C. and step-daughters Catherine White, Toronto, ON, Charlene Frenette, Halifax and his adoring grandchildren, Jamie, Mikaela, Emily, Stephanie, and Victoria MacNeil; Marissa and Kaitlyn Murphy; James White and Tyler and Gillian Frenette. He is also survived by his brothers Leo (Georgie), London, ON, Terry (Debbie), Yarmouth, Tom (Carol), East Bay, Jerry (Mary Rose), Sydney and by his sisters Arlene (Gary) Vassallo, Sydney Forks and Annette Murphy, Sydney as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his father, he was predeceased by his brother Joseph, Vancouver, BC.
Bernie will rest at Curry's funeral home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, where visitation will be held Friday, July 22 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 23 in St. Anthony's Church, Glace Bay with Father Norman MacPhee officiating, assisted by Deacon Don McCullough. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery. All are welcome to join the family for a reception in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Care Centre at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or a charity of your choice.
