Robert Alexander Carter
1929 – 2009
The world was a better place for the life of Robert Alexander Carter. He touched everyone who knew him with his gentle, kind personality and his delightful sense of humour. Born in Prince Albert May 21st, 1929, he passed quietly from life in the loving arms of his wife Joan on September 20th, 2009. Robert is survived by his sister Peggy (Elmer); daughter Kim (Craig); sons Calvin (Carole) and Ken (Melanie); grandchildren Michael, Amanda, David, Jennifer, Rebecca; and great granddaughter Leyla. Bob was predeceased by his parents Carey and Nellie and brother Stewart. Bob and Joan were married September 26th, 1953 and spent 56 years deeply in love. Bob began his teaching career as Vice Principal at Sutherland in 1954. After two years at City Park, Bob joined the original staff at Aden Bowman in 1958 and remained there until his retirement in 1983. During his career Bob touched the lives of hundreds of students through his patience and keen humour. Bob had a great sense of duty, honour and love of his country. His brother Stewart died in WWII and Bob followed his legacy and entered the Reserves during University. He served for 18 years, much of it as the Personnel Selection Officer with the North Saskatchewan Regiment. Bob’s life was marked by his love of the outdoors and time spent at Emma Lake. His parents built a cottage there when he was a baby and he built his own cottage there in 1961. Family summers were spent at the lake or camping or canoeing on the Churchill River. Bob and Joan retired to a wonderful lakeside home at Emma Lake and spent 25 years there before returning to Saskatoon. They spent many wonderful winters in Yuma before returning to the lake each summer. Bob will be remembered as a dedicated, loving husband and gentle father. He was a man of great patience with deep faith in God and sense of honour. His approach to life was simple and straight forward. On the many canoe trips he took up north he would be asked what direction to go. His answer was always the same “Oh….straight aheadâ€. That was how Bob lived his life. He will be deeply missed. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, September 26th, 2009 at Hillcrest Funeral Home (east on 8th Street, turn right before railway crossing) at 2:00 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Sherbrooke Nursing Home (401 Acadia Drive, Saskatoon, SK S7H 3E7). Arrangements are entrusted to Kenneth Scheirich.
