We, the family of Gertrude Whalen, announce her peaceful passing Monday, Sept. 21, 2009.
Born in Grand Mira, Nov. 17, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Angus and Penny (Currie) MacMillan.
She came to work in New Waterford where she met and married her husband, Edward Whalen. She also worked tirelessly within her community and she was a valued and active member of Saint Agnes CWL where she held various positions throughout the years. She also enjoyed many hobbies such as sewing, needle work and quilting, as well as playing cards with her friends and family.
Gertie is survived by four daughters, Irene Springall, Victoria Mines, Agnes (Norman) MacLean, New Waterford, Elizabeth (Albert) Fougere, New Victoria, and Margaret (Pius) Burke, Amherst; one son, Edward (Barbara), California; and son-in-law, Lawrence MacPherson, Lingan.
She is also survived by one sister, Effie Nugent, New Waterford; and one brother, Garnet MacMillan, Ontario; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward, daughter, Donna MacPherson, son-in-law, Daniel Springall, stepdaughter and son-in-law, Ruby and Leonard LeBlanc, by her brothers, Dan, John, Peter, Duncan and Hugh and by sisters, Margaret, Annie, Mary and Agnes.
Visitation will be today (Wednesday, Sept. 23 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V. J. McGillivray Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral mass will be celebrated by Fr. Doug MacDonald at 10 a.m. Thursday, at the Parish Church of Saint Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, New Waterford, with burial in St. Agnes Cemetery.
A luncheon will follow at St. Agnes Hall on Convent Street, New Waterford.
