Sidney Bruce Meloney, 84, a resident of Queen Street, quietly passed away Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, following a brief illness, surrounded by his family.
Sid was the son of the late George and Jean (Ross) Meloney, he was born and lived all his life in North Sydney.
He was a veteran of the Second World War and left home at a young age to work on the merchant ships as a radio officer. For his service he was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Pacific Star and the War Medal of 1939-45.
Following the war, Sid joined the family shoe retail business and spent over 50 successful years operating stores in North Sydney and Sydney. He was involved for many years in community activities, downtown development, Board of Trade and a 30-year and honorary life member of the Kinsmen Club of North Sydney. In 2008, he was inducted into the Cape Breton Business Hall of Fame. He was a valued member of Royal Albert Lodge No.19, Victory Chapter No.18, Cape Breton Preceptory, Royal Order of Scotland, Philae Temple and Cape Breton Shrine Club, The Royal Order of Jesters, Cape Breton Lodge of Perfection, Isle Royal Chapter of Rose Croix, Nova Scotia Consistory and Honorary 33rd. Degree member of the ancient and accepted Scottish Rite of Canada. He was a lifetime member of Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney.
Sid and his family spent many happy days every summer at their cabin in North East Margaree.
Sid is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Lois (Luther) Meloney; and his children, Pat and Norma Bell, Dover, New Hampshire, Bruce and Lizz, North Sydney, Ross and Jan, Chicago, Illinois, Karen and Mike Landry, Bedford, Sid and Carolyn, Calgary; his nine grandchildren, Lynn, Kate, Nicholas, Jonathan, Stephen, Mallory, Daniel, Lauren and Kendall. Also surviving Sid is his sister, Edna MacLeod of North Sydney and her children, Anne, Fred (Alan) and Glenn and sister-in-law, Ella Mounce of Avondale, N.S.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Ross and brother-in-law, Purcell MacLeod.
Visitation for Sid will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday from Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. John Hannem officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation Comfort Room fund, Cape Breton Regional Hospital Palliative Care or Calvary Baptist Church.
