It is with a very sad heart that I inform Don’s family and friends that my much-loved husband and very best friend passed away Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, at the Northside General Hospital.
Since coming to Cape Breton in 2000, Don enjoyed life here. He loved the friendliness, consideration of the people he met, and, of course, the ocean. He was employed by the Cape Breton Regional Municipality – Transit Division, and in his spare time he could always be found at ‘the Ballast Grounds’ with ‘the boys’ or puttering around on his other love “Celtic Shar-Don-Ayâ€.
Don is survived by his devoted wife, Sharon (Vickers); father-in-law, Russell Vickers, both of Sydney Mines; sons, Fred (Janine), Will, Dwayne (Michelle), Matthew, Kevin and Scott (Ferraro), all of Ontario. Also in Ontario are his brothers, Bill (Elizabeth), Lyle (Nora), Jim (Faye), Russell (Rea); and his sister, Sheila. Also missing Grampa are his precious, Shyla, Kennedy and his tough guy, Hunter; his grandchildren in Ontario, Theresa, Bradley, Tyler and Katie Mahoney, honorary granddaughter, Jennifer Jupp; and great-grandchildren, Milayla and Malikai Mahoney.
In addition to his parents, Fred and Gladys Mahoney, Don was predeceased by his mother-in-law, Mary Ann Vickers, sisters, Mirielle and Shirley, brothers, Earl and George Mahoney and John Horning.
As per Don’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Due to special circumstances, a memorial service for the late Donald Mahoney will be held at a later date.
Should you wish to make a memorial donation in lieu of flowers, please consider the Northside General Hospital Palliative Care Unit.
All arrangements have been made with the assistance and kindness of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Main Street, Sydney Mines.
Words of comfort may be sent to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca.
