NEW GLASGOW – Andrew Joseph MacDonald, 41, passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, after a courageous battle against cancer.
He will be lovingly remembered by his parents, Anne (Barry) and Jack MacDonald, his brother, Paul (Marilyn); sisters, Mary (David McGreer) and Carmel (Ken Scott). He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Alexandra and Isaac MacDonald; Kathleen, Maura and Matthew McGreer; Beth, Mary and Margaret Scott, as well as his aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Andrew grew up in Trenton, NS until he was 15 and graduated from Central Kings High School in Cambridge, NS. He received a Bachelor of Arts from St. Francis Xavier University. After university, he taught English for GEOS Language Schools in Sendai and Tokyo, and also for the Nagano Public Schools in Japan. Upon returning to Canada, he lived in Toronto where he was employed by XTRA, Rogers Media and C.A.T.I.E. In Edmonton, he worked for the Edmonton Police Service and later for the RCMP in Stony Plain, AB. He was always very active in his community with volunteer work and fund raising for such organizations as ACT and TPWA in Toronto and was beginning to volunteer in the Edmonton Victim Services Program when he took ill. He was an avid traveler and cycler. He loved his Nova Scotia home and returned to live his final days amidst its beauty.
His remains are resting at the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow, with visitation from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, July 29, 2011. Funeral mass will be celebrated by Rev. Gary MacPherson at St. John the Baptist Church, New Glasgow at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2011. Interment to follow.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Palliative Care Society at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow or the University of Alberta Hospital, Edmonton.
