Caroline Grady

GRADY, CAROLINE - Caroline Rosina Annie Grady (Durrant) of Fredericton, N.B., died on July 15, 2011. Born on March 7, 1920 in Portsmouth, England, she is survived by her husband, Peter, at the Veterans’ Health Unit in Fredericton; two sons Peter (Luz Guerra) of Bowmanville, Ont., and Chris (Louise) of Island View, N.B.; two daughters, Jane of Saint John, N.B., and Rosina Louise in England; grandchildren Genevieve, Kathleen, Jacob, Isaac, Morgan, and Kyle; and a sister, Dorothy, in England. She was predeceased by her parents and a brother, Douglas. Caroline’s stage career in England was interrupted when she joined the WRNS and worked deciphering German War codes in what became known later as the Ultra Secret. She was belatedly honoured for the role she played by a commendation signed by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in 2009. After meeting RCN officer Peter Grady in London, England during WWII, they married, and she shared with countless other war brides the many challenges of settling in a strange new country. She and her husband finally settled by the sea, at Malagash, N.S., until advancing years and diminishing health brought them to Fredericton, N.B. to be nearer to family. Until her very last days, her concern was for her family. All who met her were touched by her sparkling personality and her irrepressible sense of humour as well as her kindness. True to form, wanting no fuss to be made, Caroline was buried on July 20 in a small cemetery overlooking her beloved sea at Malagash after an intimate service at the small historic St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Wallace, N.S. Caroline’s sojourn in Fredericton was short, but in that time, she made many friends. The folks at Ste Anne’s Court won’t soon forget her kicking up her heels on New Year’s Eve to the music of Nick’s Dixies. Her last home was Farraline Place, overlooking the St. John River in Fredericton, whose devoted staff gave her the care and comfort expected of a family.
Caroline’s wish was that any donations in her memory be made to a charity or organization devoted to the care of children.
