We the family of George Keats Smith regretfully announce his passing Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his family.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of Horatious and Sally (MacPherson) Smith.
He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima parish.
George retired from MT&T/Aliant in 1995 after 30 years of service. He went on to work as an independent consultant around the world in such places as Guatemala, Egypt, Hong Kong, Thailand and Puerto Rico as well as in the local area.
Besides his family, he had great passion for harness racing and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
He is survived by his daughters, Karen (Terry) Lawrence, Janice (Owen) Cunningham, Mary (Chris) Marks, all of Howie Center and his son, Terrance (Tracy) of Calgary. His precious grandchildren, Brittany, Samantha, Nicholas, Dylon, Cole, Jacqueline, Katie and Jacob; brother, Jimmy (Bertha), Northside East Bay; sister, Debbie (Marvin) Burke, Barra Head; cousin and best friend, Marie Cash, Irish Cove. Also survived by brother-in-law, Archie (Anne) Thomas; sisters-in-law, Catherine (Leo) Murray, Peggy (Roddie) Gillis, Mary Briand, Anne (Harold) Ferguson, Nancy Hermiston and Florence Thomas (Allen Farrell); along with many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Teresa (Thomas) Smith, brothers-in-law, Eugene and John Thomas and Neil Gillis and sister-in-law, Helen Thomas.
Visitation will take place Thursday, Oct. 1 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima, Sydney River, with Fr. Will MacPherson officiating. Interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
