It is with much sadness and heavy hearts the family announce Shirley Clarke Michalik passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 29, 2009, at the palliative care unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Surrounded by her loving family, Shirley died peacefully after battling a long illness.
Shirley was born on Oct. 15, 1942, in Glace Bay, N.S. She married Stan Michalik also from Glace Bay on April 25, 1962, and raised four children there.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Stan; and children, Nancy, Stanley (Irene), Todd and Heather (Glenn). In addition, she is survived by her brothers, Hughie (Yvette), Walter (Ruth), Robert (Ruth), Johnnie and David; as well as by her sisters, Eva (Jack), Arlene (Terry) and Gladys (George). Shirley will be sorely missed by her family including her nine grandchildren, Krista (Bradley), Kenneth, Stephanie, Connor, Anthony, Benjamin, Zoe, Joshua and Kendra; and a large circle of adoring nieces, nephews, cousins and brothers and sisters-in-law.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Evelyn, brothers, Lonnie and Gerald and sisters, Joan and Myrna Lee in infancy.
She attended Morrison High School, graduating in 1960. She worked in Ottawa for the federal government and then for the Employment Insurance Office, followed by the Bank of Montreal in Glace Bay.
Shirley was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and she was among the first leaders of the Beaver Colony of Glace Bay in 1976.
Shirley is fondly remembered for her fierce devotion to her family and friends, her quick wit, her dry sense of humour and her independence. Shirley loved to garden, to read and to cook and bake for her friends and family. She enjoyed bowling, her daily crosswords, playing cards, especially crib and laughing with her friends and family into the wee hours of the night.
As per Shirley’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Patten Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be held Saturday, Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, 52 Seaview St., Glace Bay, N.S.
In loving memory, donations, in lieu of flowers can be made in Shirley’s name to the Arthritis Society of Nova Scotia.
