Dr. J.S. Gupta was born and educated in India and later the United Kingdom. He trained in ophthalmology in London where he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. He worked in Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children for many years.
From there he was invited by the Director of Medical Education and Research of the Government of Punjab (India) to head the department of ophthalmology of the newly established Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India. He published several research papers while working at the institute.
In 1969, he moved to Canada and set up his practice in ophthalmology in Cape Breton. Through based in Sydney, as the only ophthalmologist in Cape Breton for several years, he provided care throughout the island to tens of thousands of patients. He practised here for 40 years introducing many innovative techniques for cataract surgery. Throughout his career he was active in professional organizations in India, the U.K. and Canada.
Dr. Gupta is survived by his wife, Dr. Mohini Gupta (retired professor of political science at Cape Breton University); his son, Dr. Nalin Gupta (pediatric neurosurgeon at the University of California, San Francisco; and his daughter, Dr. Mona Gupta (psychiatrist at the University of Montreal in Quebec). He has five grandchildren, three girls (Naomi, Naya and Gopika) and two boys (Nilesh and Kavi).
He is also survived by his two sisters, Usha Jindal, California, and Sheela Mittal, India; two brothers, Brij and Raj Gupta in India.
He was predeceased by his parents.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Welton Street, Sydney, on Tuesday, Aug. 9 from 12-2 p.m. Service will follow at 2 p.m. at the same location. Cremation will take place at Cape Breton Crematorium following the service.
Family and friends are invited to attend the cremation, and prayers at the family home afterwards, 297 Newlands Ave., Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, well-wishers are requested to send donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
