It is with sadness we announce the passing of Frances ‘Cookie’ Dupe, 66, of New Dundee, Ont., and formerly of 13th Street, New Waterford on Sept. 27, 2009, at Freeport Health Centre in Kitchener, Ont., with her five children by her side.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Georgette (Rogez) Melnick.
Cookie was heavily involved in volunteering with the fire department, legion and church in her respective areas. She was a eucharistic minister who devoted several hours to St. Vincent de Paul and the ladies auxiliary at the New Waterford hospital and the New Waterford Volunteer Fire Department. She also assisted with lunches for seniors at the Carmel Centre. Cookie enjoyed knitting, sewing and quilting and made several baptismal gowns for children being christened at Mount Carmel Church.
In earlier years, Cookie was employed at the Bayside Canteen in River Ryan. She also made several pizzas in town for pizza shops such as Brad’s, Jake’s, Johnnie’s and Simeons.
Cookie touched several people both here and in Ontario through her dedicated volunteering. Her heart was always in Cape Breton and now she returns home to rest.
Surviving are her companion, Donnie Hieple, New Dundee, Ont.; daughters, Lois (Billy) McNeil, New Waterford, Darlene (Joey) Long, Greenwood, N.S., Susan (Russ) Strickler, New Hamburg, Ont.; sons, Jay (Angie), Cambridge, Ont., Ray (Michelle), Kitchener, Ont.; brothers, Joey (Thelma), Catalone, George (Cassy), Edward (Bev), both of Glace Bay; sisters, Josie Kennedy, London, Ont., Elsie O’Donnell, Glace Bay, Lorraine (Jim) Kelly, River Denis; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Cookie was predeceased by her husband, Murgie and daughter, Donna Cook.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass to celebrate Cookie’s life will be held Saturday, Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, New Waterford, with her nephew and godson, Fr. John Melnick officiating. A private family burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the New Waterford Volunteer Fire Department. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the New Waterford Volunteer Fire Department.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
