Brett passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2009 with his family by his side after a valiant struggle following a heart attack. Brett will be lovingly remembered always by his family and many friends.

He is survived by his daughters Courtney Hanes (Jesse Mackenzie) and Tara Hanes and their mother Tammy Hanes; his parents Graeme and Bev Hanes, sister Barbara Spooner and sons Gerry & Derek, sister-in-law Annie Hanes and sons Michael, Randy and Ryan, grandmother Alice (Ginger) Hanes of Abbotsford and his partner Lee Brietzke and her daughter Chevonne, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Brett was predeceased by his brother Bob in 2002.

Brett was born in Castlegar, BC, lived a few years in Abbotsford and moved to Kamloops at age 11 where he finished his schooling at Norkam Secondary in 1978. After high school he worked for Ainsworth in Savona for a few years before starting his railroad career. Brett followed his Dad and brother and worked for CP Railway for 27 years as a Conductor and Engineer. Brett loved his job on the railroad as well as doing a variety of other projects from woodwork / carpentry and tile work.

Family was very important to Brett with his wonderful daughters Courtney and Tara being his pride and joy and who he lived for. Some of Brett\'s favorite summer past-times would be on his bike with the wind in his hair or in the fall going out hunting with his friends or his parents. You would often find Brett carving up the ski hill with his sister during the winter or boating and waterskiing with her during the summer months.

A Celebration of Brett\'s life will be held on Friday, October 2, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Calvary Community Church, 1205 Rogers Way with Pastor Don Maione officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Paul\'s Acute Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, (www.helpstpauls.com), 1081 Burrard Street, Vancouver, BC, V6Z 1Y6 would be appreciated in Brett\'s memory.
