Elvin MacKenzie ‘Al’ Coleman, age 78, a resident of Georges River, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 2, 2009, at the Northside General Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born in Springhill N.S., Al was the son of the late Daniel and Hanna (MacLeod) Coleman. Al served for 25 years in the Royal Canadian Navy and was a Veteran of the Korean War. He was past Fire Chief of the Georges River Volunteer Fire Department and a life member and Past President of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #19, North Sydney, a past Legion Zone Commander and also the past President of the Cape Breton Naval Veterans Association. Al is survived by his sister Eleanor Mitchell of Moncton and his brother Clyde Coleman, Springhill and by his longtime friends Dan MacCormick, Clarence Dawe and Margie MacLeod. He was predeceased by his wife Glenna (Debison) Coleman and by brothers Harmon, Donald, Blair, Murray and infant brother.

Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or service as requested by Al.

Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Online condolences may be sent info@wjdooley.com.
