Marjorie Hine

HINE (MACHUM) MARJORIE - Marjorie Eileen (Machum) Hine of Truro, passed away quietly at home on August 15, 2011 with her family by her side. Born in Fredericton on July 8, 1925 to Lois (Pugh) and Lee Machum. Marjorie has been on dialysis for almost six years, suffering from acute kidney disease. She took her treatments for a while in Colchester Regional Hospital, then at home, and in the past year she was driven three nights a week to Halifax. She was always treated with the utmost care, skill and understanding by the dialysis staffs. Kidney failure can be a devastating illness. Marjorie will always be remembered locally for her dynamic leadership of the Colchester Historical Society. As a volunteer president for three years, she was able to gather and inspire a very active and productive Board. When finances were dangerously low, she approached the Town Council and County Council and had them assume partial responsibility for saving our heritage with substantial grants. She was a key member of the Cobequid Naturalists Club, and presided over the Wynn Park Residents Association for several years. Marjorie attended the Provincial Normal School in Fredericton, then taught in the Commercial Department for the Fredericton School Board. In 1948 she moved to Quebec City where she taught commercial in Quebec High School. She was active in Fredericton's Brunswick Street Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, helped with the CGIT program' and gave leadership in the BYPU (Baptist Young People). It was there she met her future husband, Bill Hine. They married in 1950, and moved to Ottawa. Later they lived in Senneterre, St.Eustache, and Brossard, PQ. While in Brossard, she ran a successful bed and breakfast for seven years, counseling summer guests on how to enjoy Montreal. She was an avid quilter and knitter and became president of the South Shore Quilters Guild. She also prepared and published the Newsletter for the Montreal Women's Network. Marjorie was an avid family camper, curled, cross country skied, and did a nine day biking trip around Holland. She traveled with her husband to many exotic lands including Colombia, the Soviet Union from Moscow to Samarkand, Morocco, Turkey, Iceland and Baffin Island. Marjorie is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bill Hine; three daughters, Karen Hine, Alma NB, Audrey Peake (John) Halifax, Iris Frazer (Greg), Sackville NB, her sister Lois McAlary (Eric), Kamloops, BC. She has six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. A largely musical celebration of Marjorie's life will be held on Thursday, August 18th at 2 pm in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro with Rev.
