LOCKHART, MARY WINNIFRED (nee MESERVE) - The death of Mary Winnifred (nee Meserve) Lockhart of Windsor Court, Fredericton, NB, occurred at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on Monday, August 15th, 2011. Born in Newton, Massachusetts on February 29th, 1924 the daughter of the late Dr. Edwin Alonzo Meserve and Daphne Mildred Copp. A devoted and beloved mother, Mary is survived by her five children; June Kundert (Gordon) of Medicine Hat, AB; Donald (Janice Anderson) of Woodside, NB; Richard (Janet) of New Annan, PEI; Douglas (Deloris) of Black's Harbour, NB and Jan Lockhart (Dr. Calvin M. Smith) of Fredericton, NB. She is also survived by her cherished brother and sister-in-law, Drs. Edwin and Marilyn Meserve of Southborough MA/Sebastian, FL; 18 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and the father of her five children, George McLeod Lockhart. Mary attended Green Mountain College in Vermont and LaSalle College in Boston, Mass., before graduating as a Registered Nurse from Newton Wellsley Hospital in Massachusettes where a wing of the hospital is dedicated in memory to her father. Her mother is recognized as being the first instructor to the male nurses at the same hospital. After graduation she moved to New Brunswick and married her husband George and began raising her five children. Mary worked as a nurse at the Sackville Memorial Hospital, the Victoria Public Hospital in Fredericton and finally at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital and remembers well the day patients were transferred by ambulance "up the hill" when the DECRH opened. She volunteered for many years at the Fredericton Community Kitchen, as well as singing in many of her church choirs throughout the years.
The family will receive visitors at McAdam's Funeral Home, 160 York Street on Tuesday, August 16th, 2011 from 6 to 8 PM. A memorial service will take place at the Gentle Shepherd Community Church, 870 Grandame Street, Fredericton on Wednesday, August 17th, 2011 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Dr. Brad Little officiating. Interment will take place in Newton Community Cemetery, Newton Mass at a later date. For those who wish, memorial tributes made to the Arthritis Society of New Brunswick or to the charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated.
