Judie Smith (nee Probert)
December 3, 1948 – August 17, 2011. Passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at her home in Middle Cove, August 17, 2011, after a courageous and inspiring journey with cancer, Judie Smith, aged 62 years. Predeceased by her parents, Jack and Elizabeth “Bess” (nee Codner) Probert, mother and father-in-law Don and Louise Smith, step-father Duncan MacDonald and sister-in-law Louise (nee Smith) Hudson. Leaving to mourn her husband of 40 years, soul mate and best friend, Gord Smith; loving and supportive daughters: Nancy and husband Cody Westman and Erin and husband Jarrod Hann; her little “silver lining” grandson Evan Hann; special brother and sister-in-law: Stephen and Maureen Probert and their children and grandchildren; special “sister and brother-in-law” cousin Noreen and Harold Press and their children; special “mother” Aunt Mary (nee Codner) MacDonald and her step-children: Stan (Margie) MacDonald, Alexander MacDonald, Duncan MacDonald and Mary (Albert) Rennie; brothers-in-law: Harvey (Patsy) Smith, Dennis (Jan) Smith, Albert Hudson (Betty Dunne); and sisters-in-law: Marilyn Smith (Charlie Harris), Pauline (Eric) Stevens, and their children and grandchildren; Judie’s best four-footed furry friend “Shamus”; life-long friends: Susan (nee Peddigrew) Snook (Dave-deceased), Patsy and Harvey Smith, Jim and Dawn Peddigrew, Corinne and Tony Boland, Bev and Aubrey Freeborn, Barb and Ron Burry, Sandy Whelan, and Pat (Brian) Oliver; and all of her friends in Beta Sigma Phi, Craft Club, Book Club, and fellow employees at the A.C. Hunter Library, QEII Library, Health Sciences Library, and the Department of Education, NL. The family wishes to extend thanks to Dr. Siddiqui and his staff at the Health Sciences Cancer Clinic, and to Dr. Liu, Nicole Perrera and staff at the Princess Margaret Hospital for all their research, knowledge and support: a special thank you to Dr. Paula Walsh for all her support and home visits; also for all support given to the family throughout “Judie’s Journey”, especially Judy Hann and family. Judie had many victories throughout this journey because of her courageous, indomitable spirit which touched and inspired all of us. She cared about everyone, and never judged anyone. The world was a better place because of her goodness. At Judie’s request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Thursday and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from St. Paul’s Church, Newfoundland Drive on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow the service in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Judie’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
