Betty Hatter
Betty Hatter (Holroyd) 1933- 2024 passed away peacefully in her own bed in her Ottawa home. She was surrounded by her wonderful Symphony family - where she has lived for the past 5 years. Two of our staff were lying down beside her while she took her last breaths. She had been weaker and palliative for months, but about ten days ago she fell, which may have been from a small stroke and then declined further.
My mum was born in England in 1933, she lived 91 good years. She is survived by myself, my brother Mark Hatter, and her grand children; Jocelynne Brush, Daniel Brush and Samantha Hatter. My mum had four children, two of them passed away: Joanne Hatter (1961-1986) and Claire Hatter (1959-2007). She was married to Brian Hatter until 1976 and then was with long time companion Percy Thorpe who passed away earlier this year in Toronto.
My mother was an avid quilter, traveler, and compassionate nurse. I learned to sew from her and I learned acceptance, tolerance and independence from her. She was a long-time evening supervisor at the Douglas Hospital, Montreal and then owned a B&B in Mansonville QC.
We will have a celebration of life at the Symphony Orleans in a few weeks and then we will spread her ashes with her two daughters in Lac de Deux Mountain, in Ile Bizard. Both staff and residents will be invited. Date to follow.
I can not thank the caring staff at Symphony Senior Living Orleans enough, they have been fantastic during the past few months, and particularly the last days of her life. I had just arrived back to Canada, and I received the call from Jodi before I could begin the next leg of the trip to Ottawa. During the days leading up to her passing, I relied on the team’s guidance, care and compassion and although I didn’t make it back in time for her last breaths, I know she was surrounded by love.
With respect and love, Lisa Brush
