John Brown passed away peacefully after a short illness on Aug. 18, 2011.
Born in Cranberry, Sydney Mines, Feb. 24, 1915, he was a son of the late William and Margaret (McIntyre) Brown.
John served in the Second World War with the 5th Armored Division and the 17th Field Regiment. He was stationed overseas in Italy and was part of the Liberation of Holland. After his service, John returned home to Sydney Mines where he was employed as a miner for over 40 years at the Princess Colliery.
John was a true sports fan, he loved watching and playing baseball, hockey, bowling and fishing. In 1930 John was a member of the Cape Breton Intermediate Champions Hockey team known as the Cranberry Travelers. He was also the three-time winner of the Dr. T. J. McKeough “Largest Trout Contest”. As well John was Umpire in Chief of the Sydney Mines & District Little League Baseball Association when it was established. John loved life, family and friends and touched the lives of everyone he came into contact with.
He is survived by daughter, Alice Vickers and son, Brian Mitchell; grandchildren, Beverly, Sherry, Jeanetta and Johnathan; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Brandon and Alexandra; great-great-grandson, Nolan.
John was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth (Abbott) Brown; soulmate and bestfriend, Jeanette Mitchell, siblings, Harold, William, Clarence, Donald and Margaret.
Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 23, with a funeral service, 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24 both in Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Interment in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
