It is with heavy hearts we the family announce the passing of Duncan MacLeod, Sydney, on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at the An Cala unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney, Nov. 22, 1927, to John R. and Susan (Powell) MacLeod.
Dad will be missed by all that knew him for his quick wit, and his love of storytelling which his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will forever treasure. Duncan worked at Sydney Steel for 44 years, retiring from the rail mill.
Duncan is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Theresa (Martell); and nine children, Brian (Judi), Susan (Roger Strickland), Duncan (Michelle), Linda, Mary Theresa (Martin Ross), Bruce (Anna), Barbara (Allan MacPherson), Hugh (Heather), Shaun (Stacey); his grandchildren, Kristal, Kelly, Stephen, Anne Marie, Jason, Ashley, Breanne, Erin, Jody, Michael, Jennifer, Jordan, Troy, Adam, Thomas, Elizabeth and Quincy; his great-grandchildren, Karis, Kristen, Jude, Owen ‘O.G.’, B.J., Myles, Andrew, Lachlyne, Reese, Cadence, Cameron, Aaron, Alisdair, Mya and Paytra. He is also survived by his sisters, Florence (late Fern) MacLeod, Francis (Jack) O’Brien, Mary (late Frank) O’Brien, Sydney; one brother, Ronald, Toronto; several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by an infant son, Hugh Victor, grandson, Brian Edward, sisters, Pauline Morrison, Jessie MacEachern and brothers, Jimmy, Hughie, Fraser Jack, Donald and John.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Aug. 23 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will take place 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24 at St. Theresa’s Church with Fr. James Oliver officiating. Interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. A reception will be held at Chant’s Funeral Home reception area, all are welcome to join in the celebration of Duncan’s life.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Duncan’s memory can be made to the IWK Health Centre Foundation or the Salvation Army.
