Gerald B. Malone

A proud veteran of the British Army, who served his country as a member of the First Draft, 166th Newfoundland Field Regiment, Royal Artillery (970317) during World War II. Gerald B. Malone passed peacefully away at the Caribou Memorial Pavilion following a brief illness on Friday August 19, 2011. Leaving to mourn his loss, and with him as he passed away, his wife of 71 years, Florence (Quan) Malone and his six children: Rosanne (Basil) Delaney, Ted (Alice) Malone, Brenda Malone, Gail Malone, Paul (Beverly) Malone and Brian (Paulette) Malone. He also leaves with fond memories of “grand-dad,” his grandchildren: Stephen Delaney, Nancy Delaney-Morton, Valerie Malone, Jennifer Malone-Earle, Craig Richard, Aimee Richard, Meaghan Malone, Allison Malone, Stephanie Malone, Claire Malone; plus great grandchildren: Eamon and Eli Morton, Derrick and Michael Malone-Cull and Ethan and Amelia Richard. In addition he will be missed by his sister, Nancy (Mose) Nichol; his sister-in-law, Doris (Mike) Malone; nieces and nephews throughout Canada and the United States; and step-grandchildren: Carol-Anne, Jennifer, Tyler and Makayla. Gerry was born in St. John's on November 19, 1918 and attended St. Patrick’s Hall School. When the Second World War broke out, he was one of the First 400 to volunteer for service in the Royal Artillery. He went overseas in April 1940 and served in Britain, North Africa and Italy. When the war ended, he returned to St. John’s. In November 1945, he joined the staff of the Labour Relations Office. While working full time; he attended night school to finish High School, graduating with an Honours Diploma. In 1947 he attended Columbia University in New York where he obtained a Diploma in Statistical Methods. During his career with the Government of Newfoundland, he advanced from his initial position at the Clerk level in 1945 to positions at the Deputy Minister level when he retired in 1979. In addition to his professional career, he was active in the community. He was on the executive of the Patrician Alumnae Association of St. Patrick’s Hall; a member of the Historical Advisory Committee on the Second World War; Chief Instructor of the 2494 St. Pat's Army Cadet Corps from 1952 to 1963; member for 65 years of the Terra Nova Council of the Knights of Columbus; a Life Member of Branch 56 Royal Canadian Legion (65 years of service); member of the Rehabilitation Council for Handicapped Persons; and an Honorary Life Member of the Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee. Resting at Carnell's Funeral home, 329 Freshwater Road on Sunday August 21st from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., and Monday August 22nd from 10-12 noon, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Pius X Church, Smithville Crescent, on Tuesday August 23rd, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. with interment to follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery, The Boulevard.
