Ward, Donald MacKenzie - 84, of New Minas, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2011 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in New Minas, he was a son of the late Clarence and Charlotte (Reid) Ward. He had owned and operated his own auto body repair shop and later retired from the Kings County Amalgamated School Board. He was a veteran member of the New Minas Volunteer Fire Department of which he had been instrumental in establishing. He was a charter member of the New Minas Lions Club and a former member of the High Tide Drifters and the Haley Square Dancers. He enjoyed playing cards, especially 45's and crib, golfing, playing hockey (in his earlier years) and was a talented woodworking craftsman. Don was the oldest living male born and living in New Minas. He is survived by his wife, Ruby (Halliday) (Lockhart); three daughters, Shirley Pearl (Jake Kennie), Kentville; Judy Parker, Medford; Sheila Ward-O'Quinn (Augustine "Gus" O'Quinn), Kentville; step-daughter, Marsha (Doug) Forsythe, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario; grandchildren, Tanya (Mark) Neary, Sarah (Craig) Cameron, Nicholas Pearl, Kelly Messom and Alex Pearl; step-grandchildren, Stephanie Forsythe, Vancouver; Jonathan Forsythe, New York; great grandchildren, Madeline and Ben Neary and Kate Cameron. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by a daughter, Dianne Ward; a granddaughter, Candice Parker; a son-in-law, Gary Pearl; two sisters, Kerry and Dorothy; two brothers, Gordon and Gerald. Cremation has taken place. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, August 24, 2011 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Candice Parker Memorial Bursary (NKEC) or the S.P.C.A. Animal Shelter, Waterville.
