SHANKEL-WOOLFREY, Sheri Maureen – (June 6, 1955 - December 2, 2008): Daughters Sandy (husband Mark Fahey and grandsons Alex and Liam), Katie (husband Randy King) and Emily (Mike Dobbin) sadly announce the passing of their mother Sheri Shankel-Woolfrey at the Health Sciences Centre on Tuesday, December 2, 2008. She had a 13 year challenge with primary bilary cirrhosis later complicated by liver cancer. Also leaving to mourn, mother Dorothy Mae Shankel (father Earl, deceased); sisters Suanne Sampson (Liverpool, Nova Scotia) and Cathy Blake (Alexander, Maine), their husbands and families. Sheri was born in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. She graduated from Mount St. Vincent University and moved to Newfoundland in 1976 to accept a teaching position on New World Island. What was to be a two-year temporary stay, in Newfoundland, became a home for the past three decades. Sheri completed eighteen years of teaching, sixteen of which were at J.M. Olds Collegiate, Twillingate before retiring due to ill health. She was a committed educator both inside the classroom and out. She volunteered her time and skills with numerous youth and community organizations; most recently the St. John’s Status of Women’s Council and Women’s Centre. She was recognized for her abilities with a Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence, and a Commonwealth Youth Service Award plus numerous other recognitions. Following her retirement, Sheri became associated with the School Milk Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, a partnership she very much enjoyed. Sheri lived life with spirit, touched with a healthy dose of reality and practicality. A few of her favorite past-times were gardening, with a special love of spring flowers, creating heirloom quality handwork for family and friends, keeping “tummies” full and creative writing. Her daughters always knew they were the highlight and pride of her life. They shared a very special bond with her. The laughter and good times they shared became even more cherished as her illnesses progressed. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Carnell\'s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service in celebration of Sheri’s life will take place on Friday, December 5, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel. Interment to follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Sheri’s desire was that donations be given to Bridges of Hope Food Bank or the Marguerite’s Place Building Fund.
