Passed in: Upper Woods Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: August 22nd, 2011
MALONE, Susan Louise (Goreham), Upper Woods Harbour, Shelburne County went to be with her Lord on Monday, August 22, 2011. Susan was a daughter of the late Sylvester and Diana (Nickerson) Goreham of Woods Harbour. She is survived by her husband, William R. Malone and children, Heidi Malone, Lower Eel Brook; Vanessa Malone (Mike), Abram’s River; Josh Malone (Huijing), Petewawa, Ontario. Treasured grandchildren are Jesse, Brianna and Nathanial Malone; Desmond and Kailun Malone. Surviving siblings are Evan (Elizabeth) Goreham and family, Upper Woods Harbour; Bonita Slevin and family, Barrington Passage; Patrice (Gregory) Berko and family, Calgary, Alberta. Also survived by sister-in-law, Helen Goreham and family. She was predeceased by a brother. Roland Ellis Goreham. Susan attended Nova Scotia Teachers’ College, Truro after high school and taught for 29 years at the old Woods Harbour Consolidated School followed by Evelyn Richardson Memorial Elementary School. While teaching and raising three young children, she continued to upgrade her license on an ongoing basis culminating in study at University St. Anne. Susan instilled a quest for learning in hundreds of local area children. She was strict with high expectations for her students to succeed, but well loved. Her approach to education involved ardent reading and fun activities for balance. Sadly, failing eyesight brought on retirement in 1996. To fill the void, she “regrouped” and despite this additional challenge became more involved in her passion for genealogy. Her arduous task, for the Historical Society in Barrington, was transcribing/typewriting old, deteriorating newspaper articles to salvage and make the information available for future generations. Susan shared her avid interest in genealogy with her recently deceased uncle, Ernie (Ernest) Goreham, Conn., U.S.A. She had Communications with many people from the United States, who were grateful for help in garnering information concerning their family trees. Susan and Bill generously opened their hearts and home to many, over the years, who needed a safe haven. They have been prominent members of the Wesleyan Church, sharing solos, singing in the choir and many volunteer activities entailed as members of the congregation. Sue’s physical limitations of being born with one arm did not hold her back from anything, including skipping rope, riding horses, knitting, playing trumpet, sewing clothes for her children or shelling lobsters. Her lovely needlepoint pictures grace their home, as well as oil paintings and quilts. She recalls her father as saying “You can be whatever you want to be, if you try hard enough”. Because of her philosophy concerning education, Sue was extremely pleased to witness the studies of their son, Josh at Acadia University and his recent promotion to Lieutenant in the military. Another highlight was graduation of their daughters from Dalhousie University with Bachelors of Science in Nursing. They are both employed at Yarmouth Regional Hospital. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a true bastion of spirit, strength, love and endurance of mind. Funeral service was held on Thursday, August 25 from the Woods Harbour Wesleyan Church, Rev. Rod Guptill officiating. Burial was in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Upper Woods Harbour. Memorial donations in memory of Susan may be made to the Woods Harbour Wesleyan Church or the Barrington Historical Society.
