MORTON, Richard Summerton “Dick”, died Wednesday, August 31, 2011, at his home in Bible Hill, with his wife by his side. He was 80 years old. He was born March 23, 1931, in Peterborough, ON, grew up in Kentville and later settled in Bible Hill, where he was employed by the Department of Agriculture for 38 years as a horticulturalist in charge of Ornamentals. Dick was very active in the Nova Scotia Association of Garden Clubs (NSAGC), and the formation of Landscape Nova Scotia. A member of St. James Presbyterian Church, Dick was an avid collector of train and John Deere memorabilia, loved gardening (especially growing Dahlias), he adored his dogs and basketball was his favorite sport to play and watch. He also enjoyed many happy times at his cottage on Caribou Island with family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara (Beattie); his sons, Gary (Lynda) and Jeff (Nancy); his grandchildren, Becky, Jenny, Holly, Alex and Ben. He was predeceased by his parents, Summerton Morton and Lydia White and his sister, Gwen Gonsalves. Visitation will be held 1 to 2:45pm on Saturday, September 3, followed by funeral service at 3pm, all in the Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, Dr. Brian Ross officiating with a reception to follow in the funeral home. Family flowers only, however, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association, the VON, Truro Branch or a charity of your choice are most welcome.
