Gerald "Gerry" Nason
NASON, GERALD "GERRY" - Gerald E. “Gerry” Nason, 82, of Granby, CT, formerly of Simsbury, CT, died on Wednesday, (August 31, 2011) at Hartford Hospital. Gerry was the beloved husband of Mary (Halstead) Nason, and they would have celebrated 58 years of marriage in October. Born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada on September 7, 1928 to Hazel (Rynax) and Ernest Nason, Gerry graduated with a bachelor of science in Chemistry from the University of New Brunswick in 1950. He then lived and worked in Toronto, where he met his wife, and Baie d’Urfe, Province of Quebec, before moving to Simsbury, Connecticut in 1967. Gerry’s career in advertising spanned executive positions with Cunningham & Walsh Advertising, Barnes Group, and United Technologies, where he retired in 1987. He gave of his time and talents to numerous town and philanthropic organizations, including the Simsbury Economic Development Commission and the First Church of Christ Boards of Trustees and Christian Concern. He also served as a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels for many years. Since moving to Granby in 2004, Gerry volunteered at the Granby Town Library. An avid reader, he had a keen interest in military history books in particular. Gerry loved photography and at one time served as a judge with the Photographic Society of America’s camera club. He also used his creative talents as a woodworker, making numerous pieces of furniture and jewelry boxes that are in the homes of his family and friends today. He traveled much of the world with his wife, ever curious and interested in the world around him. He passed on his love of nature through exploring the woods with his children and taking the family on camping trips. Gerry was a loving father and grandfather. He leaves his son James Nason and his wife Patricia Riley of Simsbury, daughter Barbara Nason of Springfield, Massachusetts, and daughter Anne Nason and her husband Kenneth Briner of Ayer, Massachusetts. His grandson Andrew Nason Briner of Ayer loved listening to Granddad’s humorous stories of growing up, and treasures memories of going to the New England Air Museum with his grandfather. His family will receive friends THIS Sunday, September 4, from 3-5 p.m., at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 10, 1 p.m., at First Church of Christ, 689 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury.
