THISTLETHWAITE: Lloyd Andrew, age 99 years, of Swift Current, SK, passed away Friday, August 26, 2011 at the Herbert Integrated Facility, Herbert, SK. The funeral service was held at 2:00 P.M. from The First United Church, Swift Current, SK, with Reverend Sharon Ferguson-Hood officiating. The soloist for the service was Sharon Veer and the organist was Patti McCleary. The eulogy, written by his grandchildren, Jackie, Ronalee, Norman, J.D., Robert, Elizabeth Ann, Mary Louise, Christina, Matia and was read by Norman Thistlethwaite, Elizabeth Ann Girling and Matia Antulov. The interment service was held at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current, SK. Lloyd is survived by his children: Doreen (Dick) Girling; Ron (Vicki) Thistlethwaite and Sally Ann Thistlethwaite; grandchildren: Robert (Anne Louise) Girling, Elizabeth Ann Girling, Mary Louise (James) Deighton, Jackie (Randy) Maffenbeier, Norm Thistlethwaite, Ronalee (Kevin) Korol, J. D. Thistlethwaite, Christina & Matia Antulov; great grandchildren: Adam and Alec Girling, Sydney & Ashley Deighton, R.J. Thistlethwaite, Danielle and Austin Larochelle; step-grandchildren: Shawn & Jamie Maffenbeier, Jordan, Molly and Brynn Korol, Elly Thistlethwaite and Sofia Antulov. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Jessie and Pat Thistlethwaite, a brother-in-law Melbourne Halverson and numerious neices and nephews. Lloyd was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy; brothers: Ashworth and Ralph and sisters: Angie and Dorothy, a brother-in-law: Raymond Anderson and a sister-in-law: Donnie Thistlethwaite. Lloyd was born at the "King" farmhouse at Stewart Valley on January 7, 1912. Lloyd started school 3.5 miles from his farm in 1918, then moved to Swift Current for High School at Beatty Collegiate, and finished in 1928. Lloyd was married to Dorothy Black at her family farm near Regina Beach, on November 11, 1937. Following the wedding, the couple encountered a raging snow storm in the Qu'Appelle Valley, resulting in many stories being told. Lloyd started farming with his family and bought his farm during the depression and farmed for the next 40 years in the Stewart Valley area. Lloyd was involved with the baseball and hockey teams, the Rink and Hall committees, Home and School, the Railway Retention committee, and the Wheat Pool commitee. He was a very community minded man. The building of the Stewart Valley Rink was a major project he was involved in, as well as the building of the Curling Rink, and the building of the Community Hall, another major project at that time. Later in life, following a move to Swift Current, Lloyd and Dorothy enjoyed curling and bowling- winning several trophys. Travelling played a large part in their lives with destinations that included Hawaii, England, Toronto, Montreal (Expo), Vancouver, the USA and many others as well, with his favorite being Alaska! Lloyd became a member of the Kiwanis Prairie Pioneers, which he greatly enjoyed and he delivered meals on wheels for many years. Although Lloyd was active in many areas, sports were his main love. He coached baseball for over 18 years, leading the Stewart Valley teams to many championships. He was involved in Stewart Valley hockey teams as well, coaching and refereeing for numerous years. Donations in his memory to the Prairie Pioneers Lodge Alzheimers Unit or to a charity of your choice, would be appreciated by the family.
