Millard Clarence Rector
Millard Clarence Rector passed away at the age of 96 on Sept.1/11 in Colchester Co. Hospital. Born in Parrsboro, he was the son of Clarence and Hattie Rector. He was a veteran of WW11 having served overseas for five years. He served with The West NS Regiment, The First Special Service Force and the Cape Breton Highlanders. His greatest accomplishment during those years was participating in the liberation of Rome.
Millard spent most of his life working as a carpenter in Nova Scotia and Ontario. A kind man with a generous spirit and sharp wit, Millard always made time for those in need. Although confined to a wheelchair in later years, he continued to drive his van and participate in card games at the Legion, Air Force Club and The Good Neighbour’s Club.
He is survived by daughters, Shirley Rogers (Ralph),Valley; Darlene Davidson, Debert; three grandchildren, Craig Rogers, Michele (Elliott) Davidson and Kolin Davidson, four great-grandchildren and one great- great-granddaughter; sisters, Lola Lynds, North River; Margaret Johnson, Truro; Evelyn Sopher, Halifax; brothers, Bill Cummings and Bob Cummings, PEI; Donnie Cummings, Truro; several nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his family and very special companion Margaret Roode.
Millard was predeceased by his wife Dorothy (Smith) Rector; granddaughter Andrea
Rogers; sisters Melita Geldart; Jean Lambke; Mina Canning; Lois Smith; and Dorothy Quigley.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Sunday Sept.4, at 2:00 pm at Mattatall-Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young St. Truro. Rev. David Lutes will officiate with a reception to follow in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Robie Street Cemetery, Truro. Visitation will be held Saturday Sept. 3, 7-9 pm beginning with a Legion Tribute at 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Royal Canadian Legion #26, Truro, Building Fund or Brunswick St. United Church would be appreciated.
