It is with deep sorrow, that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of our mother, Thelma Petrie, 99, of MacGillivray Guest Home, Sydney, and formerly of New Waterford Lake on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a brief illness.
Born in New Waterford in 1912, Thelma was the daughter of the late John ‘Jack’ and Florence (MacDonald) Townsend.
She was a loving mother to her son, Leroy and his wife, Charlene, Sydney, and her daughter, Phil and her husband, Bernie Quinn, South Bar. Thelma is also survived by her grandchildren, Jason Petrie, Amanda Quinn, Jillian Quinn, great-grandson, Damon Quinn; and many nieces and nephews.
Thelma was predeceased by her husband, Roy Petrie, brothers, Joey and Cecil Townsend, sisters, Margaret Burchell, Eva LeDrew, Edna Budge, Jean Smith and Muriel Stubbard.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Sept. 6 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Ray Huntley is Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Leonard’s Church, Mt. Carmel Avenue, New Waterford, followed by interment in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, New Victoria. Reception will be held at St. Leonard’s Hall, Convent Street.
As an expression of sympathy for Thelma, memorial donations in her memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice or the New Waterford Homecare Services.
